The Melton family's funeral service history dates back to 1937 when Ellis Melton, like many young men at the time, traveled from the hill country of Arkansas to California. There he found employment at the Merkley-Austin Mortuary in San Diego and graduated from California College of Mortuary Science in 1941.

In 1943, Ellis was drafted into the United States Army Air Corps and proudly served his country in World War II. When his military duty ended in 1946, Ellis returned to Little Rock to seek employment in funeral service. While applying for a job at a funeral home, he learned of an opportunity with the Funeral Supply and Equipment Company as a sales representative, a job he accepted thus beginning a family history in the casket and funeral supply business.

In 1952 Ellis was able to purchase the company from its founder, Elmo Marsh and along with a partner, Jack Robinson, formed the Robinson-Melton Company. In 1957, Ellis purchased the interest of his partner and re-named it Ellis Melton Company.

Presley Melton, Ellis' son began working for his father in 1972 and later purchased the company from his father. In 2001, Ellis Melton Company purchased the Louisiana and Arkansas distribution centers of West Point Casket Company expanding the company dramatically. Within the next year both of Presley's sons, Mark and Adam Melton joined the family business. In January of 2006 the Melton family became distributors of Aurora products.  Aurora Casket Company is the largest family owned casket manufacturer in the United States.
